Rezoning Ordinance- Car washes in the Neighborhood. Why is this bad?
So what's the big deal? As most of you know, we have started a beautification committee for our neighborhood and we are in the works of having a home and garden tour in 2011. You have also noticed the cafe and dog park surveys on our website. We are striving to make our neighborhood a beautiful, "walkable" neighborhood. The fundamental premises is that we want the Timrod Park neighborhood to enable and encourage social ties and community connections. Over the last 20 years more than a dozen large studies have shown that people who are socially disconnected are between 2 and 5 times more likely to die from all causes, compared with matched individuals who have close ties to family, friends and community. The way we design our neighborhood affects the degree of our social connections. We are a traditional, urban neighborhood and that enables us to do our daily activities (ex. grocery shopping, going to the park) without a use of a car. Our neighborhood encourages socialization and community bonding. Those are the assets of living in Timrod Park! Traditional neighborhoods have the RIGHT type of "mixed-use" in their neighborhood commercial areas. So what is the right type? Do we want a car wash in our backyard or would we like to see walkable cafes, antique stores, book stores and coffee shops? There is an effort by a city council member to start allowing car washes in our neighborhood commercial areas. We already have two right now at the corners of our neighborhood. Do we want the future of Timrod Park to be congested with cars and ugly concrete buildings or do we want a beautiful, walkable neighborhood. YOU DECIDE. It would benefit the future of our neighborhood if you attend the commission meeting and share your thoughts regarding the requested change in ordinance. The meeting will be held on May 11th at 6:30 PM in the city council chambers. Please voice your opinion at this meeting. It is important to the future of Timrod Park.
