The 8th Annual Chick-Fil-A Spirit of Florence “A Family Celebration” will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at Timrod Park and Legion Field.
The festival will begin at 8:00am at Timrod Park with a 5K Run/Walk. Pre-Race registration is $20 and $15 for Military Veterans. Registration the day of the event between 7:00am and 7:45am at the Billy Jeffers Center in Timrod Park is $25. Entry forms can be attained from All Star Sports, Strike Zone and the City of Florence Parks & Beautification Administrative Offices. From 10:00am till 4:00pm at Timrod Park, the festival will include free tennis lessons from 11am to 2:00pm; food vendors on site and the public is invited to bring their own picnic basket; Medstar Ambulance Services with the crowd favorite ice towels; City of Florence Firetruck and Police Cars on display; Florence Police offering Child ID Fingerprinting; balloon give-away; arts-n-crafts vendors; Science South; Library staff on site to provide information about upcoming programs, information on the library and to register for library cards; inflatables and carnival games; John Tudor’s Magic Show at 11am and 2pm; balloon sculpturing with Tim Fisher and John Dean; All-American tattoos and canvas painting with the Barnes Street Teen Club; Registration for the Chick-Fil-A Florence Jr. Football League and raffle to win a 2012 GMC or Buick vehicle (up to a $29,000 value) with local sponsor King Cadillac-Oldsmobile-GMC; “A New Creation” performing Beach and Oldies at the amphitheatre from 10:30am to 12:30pm and again at 1:30pm to 3:30pm; Dan E. Lockemy live and his “Special Edition” Beach Show from 1:00pm to 5:00pm; free admission to the Florence Museum to see the Van Dam Collection of Rare Textiles and the first public showing of a recently acquired donation of textiles from the private collection of Andy and Linda Van Dam of Camden, S. C. The exhibit will feature functional, ritual and decorative textiles from West Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East.
After the festival ends at Timrod Park the public is invited to head to Legion Field where the gates will open at 4:00pm for a Pre-RedWolves Game concert with Mid-Life Crisis at 5:00pm; Parachute Jump at 6:40pm with the All American Free Fall Team from Ft. Bragg before the National Anthem and Florence RedWolves vs Morehead City Game starting at 7:00pm with a post game firework show. General admission to the baseball game is $5. The Spirit of Florence is a festival provided to the community by a steering committee of local volunteer citizens. The event is scheduled for the first Saturday in July each year.

Spirit of Florence-Volunteers
Spirit of Florence organizers are looking for volunteers to help blow up balloons, apply tattoos and face painting at Spirit of Florence, July 2, 2011. They would like to break up the volunteer time for 2 hours only since it is a family day festival. Times are: 10:00-12:00, 12:00-2:00 and 2:00-4:00. Spirit of Florence - 5K Race/Walk
There will be a 5K Race/Walk July 2, 2011 at 8 AM. The run/walk will start and end at Timrod Park in front of the tennis courts. The race is presented by The Florence Track Club and The City of Florence Parks and Beautification Department. For early registration, please contact 843.665.3253 to obtain a map of the course and registration form. Late registration will be from 7AM-7:45AM in Timrod Park on race day. The entry fee is $15 for Military Veterans, $20 Early Registration and $25 for Late Registration (Race Day). There will be refreshments, prizes and fun! 2011 Timrod Park Independence Day Home Decorating Contest
Timrod Park Salutes America! Timrod Park Neighborhood Association Invites all residents to enter their home in the Independence Day Home Decorating Contest. All participants are asked to have their home decorations completed by Thursday, June 30th, 2011. Winners will be announced on July 2nd during the "Spirit of Florence" in Timrod Park. Awards will be first place and runner-up in each of the three categories: Most Attractive, Most Creative and Most Patriotic. Please click HERE to fill out submission form.

Independence Day was made more festive by several of our neighbors who participated in the Timrod Park Home Decoration Contest. First place was awarded to Sheldon and Betty Shelley on Warley; second, Susie and Kathy Brown on Park View Circle. Several other homes were decorated, including, Tara Durden and Alicia Connelly on McQueen Street and the Smith’s home on Timrod Park Drive.
The contest prizes were donated by businesses in the neighborhood, including, Piggly Wiggly, White Swan and Papa John’s. The “Spirit of Florence” Committee and the Timrod Park Neighborhood Association appreciate your participation and contribution.

Save the date for the 3rd of July Celebration, Spirit of Florence in Timrod Park. Adults and children will have plenty to keep them busy Sunday, July 3rd, as they celebrate freedom and independence at the “Spirit of Florence” family festival. The seventh annual “Spirit of Florence” will begin with a 5K walk/run at 8 a.m. But the majority of the “Spirit of Florence” activities will kick off at 10 a.m. at Timrod Park in Florence. There will be face painting, carnival games, balloon sculpting, live music and many other activities throughout the day. Food vendors will be on-site in the park, but attendees are also encouraged to bring a BLANKET and PICNIC LUNCH.
Timrod Park Residents will also have an Independence Day Home Home Decorating Contest.

The idea of a July Fourth community celebration began in the 1970s with “Florence Loves America” day at Timrod Park, City of Florence Leisure Services Supervisor Rocky Rietkovich said. “We are continuing that tradition with a fun, inexpensive day that will allow everyone to have an enjoyable here at home. We also have people join us from neighboring communities or who may be staying in Florence on their way through to another destination.”
The festival is sponsored by the City of Florence Parks & Leisure Services, the Florence County Drs. Bruce and Lee Library, the Florence Museum, the Florence Police Department and the Florence RedWolves.
Proceeds from the festival benefit several local nonprofit organizations that include Camp Fever, Florence Track Club, Florence International Children’s Games and Florence Tennis Association community.

TRAFFIC INFO
From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday:
- Traffic on Waters Avenue will run one way, heading west.
- Traffic on Timrod Park Drive will run one way, heading east between Spruce and McQueen streets.
- Timrod Park Drive will be closed between Coit and McQueen streets.
- Traffic on Spruce Street will run one way, heading northeast to McQueen Street.
- Traffic on McQueen street will run one way, heading north from Timrod Park Drive to Pine Street (except for residents of that area).
Parking will be available on:
- both sides of Waters Avenue.
- the east side of Spruce Street from Park Avenue to Timrod Park Drive.
- the south side of Timrod Park Drive along Timrod Park from Spruce Street to the tennis courts, then on both sides.
- both sides of McQueen Street.
- Handicap parking will be available in tennis court parking area along Timrod Park Drive and on the south side of Timrod Park Drive from the end of the tennis courts to the steps of the Jeffers Center
